As automated driving systems continue to be developed for future deployment, it is expected that the interiors of vehicles will significantly change as drivers become less engaged in the act of operating the vehicle itself – and with these new interior designs come different safety considerations. Recently, Toyota CSRC’s Jason Hallman, PhD, co-organized an SAE Technical Session with NHTSA researchers to explore the topic of non-conventional interior restraint considerations with input from top industry experts, presenting issues such as unconventional seating positions and postures, as well as new types of airbags, seats, seat belts and more.
