Rana Mohtadi and her team have been making significant strides in advancing lithium (Li) metal batteries, addressing some of the most pressing challenges in the field through design of materials that have the potential to overcome key challenges in this technology. These batteries have the potential to enhance the performance and range of electric vehicles (EVs) through improved energy density, however issues related to short circuits and limited cycle life remain due to dendrite formation.

In February 2023, Rana Mohtadi joined a team of experts from academia, national laboratories, and industry in a coordinated effort to discuss key gaps in knowledge related Li metal anode batteries and propose topics that need to be researched including standardized analytical techniques and battery testing protocols. Future advancements in the area have the potential to revolutionize the electric vehicle market, making EVs more accessible and efficient, while also contributing to environmental benefits by reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
