In order to advance self-driving technologies – with the goal of a safer, autonomous future – a wide variety of on-board vehicle systems need to work reliably and in close concert, leveraging lessons learned on the road today. At 2019’s SAE Government/Industry Meeting, CSRC’s Rini Sherony organized a technical session including industry leaders from MIT, Virginia Tech, IIHS, BMW and Volvo to explore what is being observed and learned from the SAE Level 2 and 3 technologies currently being tested. Topics explored driver interactions with autonomous systems, possible improvements to occupant safety, driver expectations with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) technology and more.
