Advancing Green Hydrogen: A Roadmap for Gigawatt-Scale PEMWE Deployment

Hydrogen produced with zero greenhouse gas emissions—commonly known as green hydrogen—is a crucial component in achieving global decarbonization targets outlined in the Paris Agreement. Proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs) are expected to play a significant role in the green hydrogen future business and technology. However, their current market penetration remains minimal, accounting for less than a gigawatt of global capacity.

A recent review published in Chemical Reviews (Impact Factor 51.4) by Dr. Gaohua Zhu and collaborators outlines the essential advancements required for PEMWEs to scale up to hundreds of gigawatts by 2030. The paper provides a comprehensive roadmap for improving PEMWE performance at the cell level, emphasizing key technological advancements needed for large-scale deployment.

The review also explores critical factors such as economies of scale, renewable energy pricing, government policies, and the development of accelerated stress tests. Additionally, insights from three leading hydrogen technology companies offer valuable perspectives on industry challenges and potential solutions.
